Our main dance theme groupings are as follows
Swing Dance
LINDY HOP The Original
Swing dance. Any music you think you can't dance to you can probably dance Lindy to. Lindy is like Cha, Cha as
far as the steps go, only different. Those who know what dance is will
understand.
West Coast
Swing (WCS) to blues music.
East Coast
Swing (ECS) to Rock and Roll music and some of that Ballroom faster music. The Europeans have a
Rock'n Roll they call the Boogie-Woogie but it is for the young, not so much for the young at heart. I took a
lesson in it once and it just about killed me. Took me two weeks to recover. You have to be young for this one.
Young-at-heart does not cut it. LOL You are jumping every beat and it is FAST as in real
fast.
Charleston to 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s big band music.
And also modern Jazz at the faster speeds. Charleston is my favourite.
Balboa and Bal Swing again
to the big band music. And when the pace gets REALLY, really fast such that you cannot dance Charleston
to it.
And we usually forget
about the Collegiate Shag and Carolina Shag.

Recall that dancing is about communicating with others without
using spoken language. We are looking for Sync and Rapport with our dance partner.
A more complete list.
Our eclectic group has dancers in the following themes.
• Freestyle (No physical connections like touching, no lead, no follow)
And, it's also different than Solo Swing moves which are learned
patterns.
However there is a Freestyle concept of getting in Sync, in Rapport with a
dance partner.
[Rapport (re-PORE) is a close and harmonious relationship in which the
people
or groups concerned are "in sync" with each other, understand each
other's
feelings or ideas, and communicate smoothly..]
• Slow dances, moderate speed dances, fast ones, the Twist etc.
(I miss the slow dances most in this COVID shutdown.)
• Ballroom (Foxtrot, Quickstep, Waltz, Rumba, Cha-cha, East Coast Swing,
Tango)
• Polka (Eeee I guess this one should be on its own.)
• Swing
• East Coast (ECS)
• West Coast (WCS)
• Charleston
• Jive (often this is single step East Coast Swing due to music
speed)
• Bal Swing (a form of Balboa)
• Not so many into any of the various Shag dances (Carolina Shag, Collegiate
Shag)
• Hustle (Rock & Roll) (BoogieWoogie in Europe)
• Latin [in addition to the ballroom Latin songs (Rumba, Cha Cha, Tango) we
see:]
• Salsa
• Columbian Salsa
• Cumbia
• Mambo
• Samba
• Merengue
• Bachata
• Kizomba
• Country (More specifically the Country 2 Step. But they also have a country
waltz.)
• Night Club 2 (Danced more in the nightclub era, but still done today.)
