Ahhhhh, just getting around to this again now. As most everyone knows the government shut the whole place (province) down. The gov now says we are in COVID WAVE 3. Does it ever end? It is now March 21, 2021. We should be thinking of getting our dance legs out of the closet or attic trunk as the case may be, and up on the floor again. Private smaller house dance parties will be a good start.

We have to start dancing again.

We are seeing that our dancing will continue to be severely interrupted for the next foreseeable future because the fall season will bring a new flu season plus wave two of COVID-19. We need a better dance solution than waiting on closed down dance halls. The trick, I guess, is not just saying what we mean and meaning what we say, but ALSO DOING WHAT WE SAY WE WILL DO.

If we are going to want to dance safely then we are going to have to dance the dance eh., as in the safe dance. We see that the police ARE laying charges to businesses that do not follow the rules.

I recall in the 1970s when I joined the Rosedale Tennis Club in Hamilton, we had a group of friends who also cycled. That particular group set up a house party circuit where one of us would host a party on a rotating basis. It was fun and worked well for a while. This present proposal is similar except we will give dance lessons and anyone can host a party.

Preamble

  • Throw a Dance Party at your place safely.
  • Become a Dance Party Host.
  • Invite your local friends.
  • Lets use this as an opportunity to plan something new.

Getting going again after the COVID shutdown is complex because the government has mandated rules with fines for breaking them. Dance halls that start up have to go through all this same rigamarole process you see here. However, a dance venue is fixed in one geographic location and large facilities have greater overhead costs that cannot be covered by small numbers of patrons.

Our group spans a large swath of Ontario. We need more involved organisation to cover disparate venues and genres.

My Skill Sets

I have some organisational skills. I do not teach competitive level dance and make no bones about that. People who wish that level should find a certified instructor. Most people do just that. There are lots of instructors, very good ones, all over in most locations.

People who do not want to compete just need to learn routines, timing, Leads and Follows and finally, musicality. The idea that the International dance crowd die-hard's propose is that everyone should learn their way. Ah, not so. No need to dance International until you are bored with the social style.

Swing Dance

I like the swing dances because they are fun, fitness inducing and I like to be skilled at a variety of swing dance themes and genres. It is quite reasonable to choose just one type of dance and do that for years. No problem. Those Followers can then only be lead in that theme/genre. I run into this at Toronto Swing Dance Society, at the Westway club, at Dovercourt house, at various Latin dance venues and then at the Capital too in a major way when you bump into very nice people who don't know any lead and follow at all but, want to learn.

So, this becomes a philosophical choice. We have an eclectic bunch in our group with a mixture of International, Social, Latin, Swing, and Country. When the various venues open up (see our venue list Ah, this list has been updated. Contact me for the update.) then we can all get back to normal, however, we will be susceptible to being shut down again.
